Aust's passport IT system out to tender

18:24 AEST Fri Sep 30 2011

Tenders have been thrown open to upgrade Australia's passport IT system as it prepares for increasing demand in coming years.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has released a request for tender for suppliers interested in providing a comprehensive new passport issuing system.

Current projections suggest there will be more than two million applications to the Australian Passport Office in 2015, when the current system will be reaching the end of its working life.

A new issuing system would help the department to improve the online passport application process and give the agency the opportunity to examine and evaluate innovative IT offerings, DFAT chief information officer Tuan Dao said.

"The new IT system will streamline and automate several passport production processes, with online services, scanning, case management, fraud control, workflow and passport printing solutions," he said.

"We are also taking this opportunity to integrate DFAT's passport IT systems into DFAT's broader IT environment."

In last year's federal budget, DFAT was allocated $100.8 million over six years for the major IT program.
