In his opening remarks at the Munich Security Conference (MSC), Secretary-General Guterres highlighted the need for international cooperation and diplomacy in these times of mounting crisis. He remarked in particular on the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, which is expected to take center stage in the public and bilateral discussions at the conference.
Guterres expressed his deep concern about the concentration of Russian troops around Ukraine and the potential military conflict in the region, stating “I still think it will not happen, but if it did, it would be catastrophic.” He went on to demand that “all issues, including the most intractable, must be addressed through diplomatic frameworks. It is high time to seriously de-escalate”.
In his speech, Guterres also pointed out that crises are proliferating around the world and warned of the risk of terrorism, noting that all these threats are exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic. Addressing the leaders present at the conference, he concluded that there needs to be “a surge in diplomacy for peace, a surge in political will for peace, and a surge in investment in peace. I count on your leadership to make it happen.”
The MSC is an annual conference on international security, bringing together heads of state and high-level government officials from around the world. Amongst others, it will be attended by US Vice President Harris and Secretary of State Blinken, Ukrainian President Zelensky, NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg and German Foreign Minister Baerbock. Russia will not be sending any officials or diplomats to the conference this year
